As both a place of worship and an important historical building, there are strict guidelines for filming inside York Minster. Anyone interested in filming inside York Minster should contact the Marketing Office to discuss these guidelines and the facility fee.
Due to the amount of film requests we receive we may not be able to accommodate them all, so we advise that an adequate notice period is given prior to the proposed filming dates. It is helpful when dealing with enquiries if a brief synopsis of the project, technical requirements and possible filming dates are included.
Visitors to York Minster are welcome to take photographs for their own personal use.
There may be a charge for commercial photography inside York Minster. Please contact the Marketing Office to discuss your enquiry, with details of your photography requirements.
Drone Filming and Photography
Drone devices are rapidly become more accessible to all and with the latest technology, filming and photography using them has become very popular, however, is it is imperative that these devices are not used around York Minster and surrounding properties.
By law, you or the flying device are not allowed within a perimeter of 100 yards of a listed building without the appropriate aviation license and insurance. Even with these, drone usage can still only be undertaken on York Minster land with the express written permission of the Chapter of York. There are no exceptions.
If you are thinking of using a drone around York Minster and are unsure of any of the above, please get in touch with the Marketing Office and we will be happy to discuss your requirements.
Charges and fees
Charges are levied for filming and photography in the Minster in certain circumstances:
- Where the images are to be sold for profit (so this would include photographs for photo libraries).
- Where the filming is for fictional purposes or for a programme not directly promoting York Minster as a visitor destination.
- For news items, or for programme or feature opportunities which feature in this pack, filming requests are dealt with on a case-by-case basis and fees may be waived.
- In addition, all commercial filming must be presented and approved by the Dean and Chapter prior to filming.
