The Stoneyard houses the York Minster Works Department, which has a range of skilled craftsmen and women looking after the 800-year-old cathedral and its precinct properties. These include the stonemasons and carvers, joiners, electricians, scaffolders, gardeners, labourers, and an admin team, all essential to the smooth and efficient maintenance of these beautiful buildings.
A large part of the team’s current work is on the Minster’s historic East End as part of York Minster Revealed, one of the largest conservation and restoration projects of its kind in Europe. York Minster’s award-winning masons and carvers are restoring and recreating the building’s historic masonry, as well as replacing some of the grotesques that have adorned the Minster for hundreds of years, which have been eroded by the weather.
