Richard Shephard Memorial Service
Thursday 30 September 2021 – 11am
York Minster will host the memorial service of Richard Shephard MBE on Thursday 30 September.
Richard was known to generations of children as an inspirational Head of the Minster School. He was also a leading church music composer – though his musical range was far wider, encompassing operettas, instrumental works, and much more.
His wit, charm and common sense made him an excellent choice as chair of the York Glaziers Trust and the Archbishop’s Youth Trust, and as a brilliantly diplomatic interim chair of the Leeds Piano Competition. He was a Deputy Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, and would have been High Sheriff in 2022.
The memorial service is in the building which he loved so much and for which he did so much. He was instrumental in establishing the girls’ choir; was Chamberlain and a lay canon; and through his work in raising funds he helped ensure the superb restoration of the Great East Window.
The service is intended to be a joyous rather than a sombre occasion. There is no dress code, and all colours are fine. There will be some of Richard’s music, together with music by his favourite composer, Richard Strauss, sung by the young contralto, Jess Dandy.
Member of the York Minster community and wider public are welcome to attend. Due to the anticipated attendance and the current guidance, this service will require a pre-booked ticket.
