Mothering Sunday

Scroll to explore

On the fourth Sunday of Lent, York Minster keeps Mothering Sunday. On this day, sometimes called Refreshment Sunday, the Lenten fast is relaxed and we give thanks for Mary, Mother of our Lord, and the church recalls its vocation to be the mother of all people.

Traditionally, people would return home to their ‘Mother church’ on Mothering Sunday, the church where they were baptised, confirmed, or married, or the place they consider to be their ‘spiritual home’. Everyone is invited to return to York Minster as the Mother Church of the City, Diocese and Province of York.

At the 11am Choral Eucharist, a posy of flowers will be distributed to everyone and traditional Simnel Cake will be served afterwards. Worshippers are encouraged to invite friends, family and neighbours to this special service. All are welcome.
