Support York Minster by becoming a Friend

Scroll to explore

Founded in 1928, the Friends of York Minster is an independent charity which works to help the cathedral preserve its past and inspire future generations.

The Friends currently has more than 2,500 members whose annual subscriptions are used to help fund specific projects to conserve and restore the cathedral and support its purpose as a place of worship and ministry for all.

As well as directly contributing to the work of the cathedral, there are a number of other benefits to joining the Friends:

Annual membership starts from £15 – see below for full details of how to join.

Projects

The Friends has supported a wide range of projects over the years, from maintaining and improving music and ornaments, to supporting education and activities for young people. This year, to celebrate its 90th anniversary, the charity is sponsoring the conservation of a 14th century window in the cathedral’s North Nave Aisle. The Penitencer’s Window is one of three 700-year-old windows in this area being conserved by York Glaziers Trust between 2016 and 2019.

The Trust is removing each window, recording its condition, cleaning the medieval glass and repairing any cracks and holes caused by exposure to the elements. The panels are then being reinstalled with new state-of-the-art environmental protective glazing, which will preserve the glass for generations to come.

Friends’ Social Activities for 2020

We hope that all our members are keeping well and cheerful in these challenging times. Unfortunately the events and holidays we had planned for this year have had to be cancelled because of the pandemic. Although the office in Church House is closed, the Friends Council is holding electronic meetings, and our secretary, Jayne Hammond, is collecting the post and has access to emails. You can still contact us regarding subscriptions and for general enquiries. Please read the letter from the Dean below.

The Prayer of the Friends:

Eternal and infinite God, whose nature is beyond our understanding and whose beauty we can neither imagine nor express, be gracious to the Friends of York Minster who delight to make this earthly house an image of the glory of heaven.

Through their gifts and labours bring them to the joy of the Holy City; through Jesus Christ our Lord who, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, is one God now and for ever. Amen.
