The Chapter of York (Charity Registration Number 1201499) is the governing body legally responsible for the care, management, administration, and Christian mission, ministry and witness of York Minster on behalf of the Church of England. A non-governing College of Canons assists the Chapter in developing its links with the wider Diocese of York.

Chapter of York

Chapter is a registered charity (Charity Registration Number 1201499) that is governed by a board of executive and non-executive trustees. All aspects of the Minster’s statutory compliance, strategic vision, policy and priorities are overseen by Chapter.

Chapter is responsible for the implementation and delivery of every aspect of worship, mission, outreach and learning, as well as the responsible stewardship of the Minster’s properties and finances. It is advised by a number of specialist committees and external advisors.

Diocese of York

College of Canons

The College of Canons consists of clergy and lay people drawn from the parish churches of the Diocese of York.

Its principal function is to be ‘the voice of the Diocese’ in discussions with the Chapter about the Minster’s work, and to assist the Chapter in developing closer ties between the Minster and the parishes of the Diocese, especially through Chapter’s programme of outreach and engagement work.
