A wedding is one of life's great moments

Scroll to explore

It is a time of solemn commitment as well as good wishes, feasting and joy.

For Christians, marriage is an invitation to share life together in the Spirit of Jesus Christ. It is based upon a solemn, public and life-long covenant, declared and celebrated in the presence of God and before witnesses.

York Minster Marriage Policy

Because York Minster is not a parish church, everyone who marries here has to obtain a Special Marriage Licence. Download our Marriage Policy for full details.

If, after reading our policy or speaking with us, it is not possible for you to be married at the Minster you could contact one of our neighbouring churches who would be happy to discuss the options for marrying in one of York’s other historic churches. Our church neighbours in the city are:

The York City Centre Churches, contact: Reverend Jane Nattrass, e: nattrassjane@aol.com or t: 07568 530503

You may also like to visit The Church of England’s wedding website, where you can find out which parish you live in, the name of your parish church and contact details for your parish priest. It also includes details of other churches you may be eligible to marry in.

“Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” – 1 Corinthians 13.4-7
