Discover a new exhibition exploring the story behind the Five Sisters Window and the vision and inspiring campaign that saw it become part of a memorial to women of the First World War.

The exhibition will explore the history of the window, a storied but often overlooked artwork, and introduce Helen Little and Almyra Gray, the inspirational women who campaigned for the window to become a memorial.

Visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about some of the women commemorated in the memorial and their wartime roles, as well as York Minster’s ongoing research.

The exhibition ends opposite the oak screens where 1,514 names are listed. If you are making a special journey to see someone’s name, please do contact us via collections@yorkminster.org so we can check whether the name appears on the screen.

Running until December 2025, Visions, Voices, Vocations: Commemorating Women of the First World War is on display in the cathedral’s North Transept, beneath the Five Sisters Window.

Entrance to the exhibition is included with a general admission ticket. The exhibition is open during standard visiting hours.
