York Musical Society and York Musical Society Orchestra presents J. S. Bach’s St Matthew Passion at York Minster.
Bach’s masterpiece for double chorus and orchestra narrates the Passion story through the Gospel of St Matthew. York Minster is appropriately magnificent for this monumental choral work. Based on St Matthew’s Gospel, Part One tells the story of the betrayal and arrest of Jesus; Part Two turns darker and softer as it depicts his trial, crucifixion and burial.
The Evangelist, sung by a tenor, narrates the Gospel text, while the words of Jesus are sung by a bass. A double chorus and orchestra, an additional soprano chorus and four additional soloists combine to make this a must-hear masterpiece.
