St William
St William of York, the patron saint of the city of York, is laid to rest in the Crypt of York Minster – the most holy and sacred space within this medieval cathedral.
For centuries, pilgrims from all walks of life, travelled from across the country seeking help, healing and hope from the tomb of William. Today, the tomb remains a significant site of prayer and pilgrimage in the north of England, and we warmly welcome all who journey to this sacred place.
Access to the Crypt and the tomb of St William is included with a sightseeing ticket.
Throughout 2026, we are marking the 800th anniversary of St William’s canonisation with a special programme of commemorative services and events, offering opportunities for prayer, reflection and thanksgiving.
A Pilgrim’s Prayer:
God, as I enter this sacred place, let me come with the heart of a pilgrim and tread quietly on this holy ground.
May I glimpse you through the beauty of stone and glass, and sense your presence in all that I see and hear, mindful that everything here is a response to your glory.
May the light that continues to dance around these walls, be a light that guides my feet back into the world, bearing a pilgrim’s heart.
Amen.
