Study Group: In the Company of the Northern Saints

Scroll to explore

On Tuesday evenings in June, spend time in the company of the Northern Saints: people whose faith and determination shaped the character of the North. Join expert speakers and examine the saints’ stories of resilience, compassion and hope as we look for practical insights we can apply to our own lives.

The study groups are open to everyone and there is no need to book. All are welcome whether you come from a Christian background, follow another faith, or simply enjoy learning about history and culture. Come as you are and take whatever is helpful or interesting to you.

Study group speakers and dates:

Tuesday 2 June: St Helena, presented by Canon Tim Goode

St Helena was the mother of Emperor Constantine, and her story is one of a remarkable rising from fairly ordinary beginnings to a place of real influence. Later in life she travelled to the Holy Land, and it’s her pilgrimage, and the care she took to honour the places linked with Jesus, that people remember her for today.

Tuesday 9 June: St Olaf, presented by Canon Maggie McLean

St Olaf was a Norwegian king whose dramatic life and fierce commitment to his newfound Christian faith made him a legendary figure across the North. He’s remembered for helping to establish Christianity in Scandinavia, and his story travelled far, inspiring devotion well beyond his own homeland. Canon Maggie journeyed to Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim in 2025 where Olaf and learnt more about this Viking Saint.

Tuesday 16 June: St Robert of Knaresborough, presented by Canon Tim Goode

St Robert of Knaresborough was a hermit who lived in a cave by the River Nidd, known for his kindness and the help he gave to anyone in need. People still remember him as someone who lived simply, cared deeply, and made a quiet but lasting difference.

Tuesday 23 June: St Cuthbert, presented by Dr Hilary Moxon

St Cuthbert was a muchloved monk and bishop of the North, known for his gentle nature, practical faith, and deep care for the people he served. His life of prayer and compassion left a powerful legacy and he remains one of the most cherished saints of Northumbria. Using the rich history contained in the beautiful glass of York Minster, Hilary will unfold little known stories contained within them.

Tuesday 30 June: St Hild, presented by Canon Maggie McLean

St Hild was the Abbess of Whitby, known for her clear thinking, wise leadership, and gift for bringing people together. Her community became a place of learning and reconciliation, and her influence helped shape the early English Church. Through Hild, we will meet Caedmon and the ‘origin story’ of Caedmon’s Hymn and perhaps other characters along the way.

Entrance will be by the South Door from 6.15pm. Each talk will begin at 6.30pm and end by 7.30pm.
