York Minster and its Precinct requires a multidisciplinary team of skilled heritage craftspeople and experts to maintain, restore and conserve its buildings and monuments for future generations to enjoy.

Find out about each department and the role they play in helping to safeguard the Minster and its surrounding properties.

Precinct management

Manage the Minster’s maintenance, restoration and conservation, and will deliver the York Minster Neighbourhood Plan and Fabric Projects.

Stonemasons

Mason, carve and fix the locally quarried stone used to restore and conserve the Minster building.

Scaffolders

Work with the Head of Masons and Head of Precinct to erect and adapt the scaffolding that they need.

Sawyers

Responsible for the operation of our stone saws and their maintenance.

Joiners

Repair and restore the woodwork in the Minster, as well as creating bespoke furniture.

Electricians

Install, inspect and test electrical equipment in the Minster and its properties

Gardeners

Take care of the 7-hectare Precinct, alongside a team of volunteers, including mowing and planting.

Plumbers

Fit and maintain water systems in the Minster and its properties.

Painters

Apply paint and other decorative finishes, including gold leaf, across the Minster and its Precinct’s buildings.

Heritage builders

Carry out a range of restoration and repairs using heritage building techniques, including use of lime mortar.
