The Ebor Singers

Philip Moore is one of this country’s finest living composers of choral music. He deploys a broad range of styles, but the end result is unmistakably distinctive. Challenging to the performer and listener, there is never a doubt that Philip has reconciled his music – and himself – to the text, be it secular or sacred. As to be expected from someone in charge of music of York Minster for 25 years up to 2008, much of Philip’s output is sacred, but there is such an eloquence – almost a purity – to his approach of setting words that is restless and original.

To celebrate the composer’s 80th birthday, Philip Moore joins The Ebor Singers and their director Paul Gameson for a selection of his choral music.

The concert will offer a rare opportunity to hear the Three Prayers of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the early work that set Philip’s musical style and response to text from his contemporaries, and a selection of other pieces including the Song of the Roses, composed in 1986 for the quincentenary of the union of the Houses of Lancaster and York, and St John’s Mass. Vaughan Williams has long been an inspiration for Philip, and we are delighted to be joined by York-born violinist Jacob George for The Lark Ascending (in a stunning new choral arrangement).

Tickets are priced at £16 with a concessionary price of £10 for under 25s and students.

Tickets are available to purchase online or by calling our Box Office on 01904 557 200.
