An inspiring new touring exhibition by award-winning photographer, Ruth Samuels, exploring the lived experiences, vocation, and ministry of disabled clergy and lay leaders within the Church of England comes to York Minster.
Commissioned by the Church of England’s Disability Project and curated by Art and Christianity, Fearfully and Wonderfully Made presents a series of 12 powerful photographic portraits, captured in meaningful locations including homes, churches, and places of ministry. Through dynamic imagery and personal storytelling, the exhibition offers a unique window into the vibrant ministries of disabled Christians, highlighting how their insights and experiences deepen and enrich the life of the Church.

This exhibition will take place inside the Chapter House at York Minster from Tuesday 7 July – Wednesday 12 August during regular sightseeing times.
Entry into the exhibition is included with your sightseeing ticket, and there is no pre-booking required.
About the artist:
Ruth Samuels is a British-Jamaican portrait and documentary photographer whose work centres on empathy, empowerment, and authentic storytelling.
A former minister who has lived with M.E. for over fourteen years, her practice is shaped by a deep personal understanding of disability and faith. Her acclaimed work has been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, the House of Lords, and Southwark Cathedral, and she is the recipient of major accolades including a Gold Award at the AOP Emerging Talent Awards (2024). Known for her sensitive use of light, texture, and tone, Samuels creates images that are both intimate and deeply human.
