Advent, the season of preparation for the great festival of Christmas, comes with extra significance this year as York Minster begins its 1400th anniversary year, which will be marked in 2027.

The Minster is preparing to welcome a record number of worshippers, introducing a second Advent Procession due to demand, and making services available online through its YouTube channel. Other time-honoured favourites such as the beloved Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, and the Christmas Carol Concerts return on two dates so that more people can enjoy the beautiful atmosphere of the season.

Visitors are invited to enjoy the popular Christmas Tree Festival, which returns with a record 100 trees, each hand-decorated by a local charity, school, or business, spilling out into the body of the Cathedral from the medieval Chapter House.

In a season of early nights and dark skies, the Minster promises candlelight, twinkling trees, and timeless music, starting with the invitation to families to witness the moment the 100 trees burst into light on 28 November. Families can also enjoy a performance of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker performed on the Minster’s Grand Organ and attend the Crib Service, which sees local children dress up as characters from the Nativity.
