Pergolesi: Stabat Mater

The Ebor Singers

Scroll to explore

The English choral tradition has long given voice to the sentiments of loss. As part of their 30th anniversary year, The Ebor Singers explore this in music expressing themes of Lent and lamentation.

Written on the young composer’s deathbed, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s masterpiece Stabat Mater offers a powerful depiction of Mary standing at the cross of Jesus, exploring lenten themes of suffering and penitence. Alongside this, the six moving motets of Hubert Parry’s Songs of Farewell reflect the composer’s experience of the First World War, longing to escape the despair violence was causing, and a profound statement to find something of peace.

Performed in the beautiful acoustic of York Minster’s Chapter house, this is certainly not a concert to be missed.
